Everybody is fascinated by whales-what they eat, Where they travel. But we are only just beginning to discover one of the most interesting thing about them - what happens to them when they die.Scientist call a whale that has died and fallen to the seafloor a “whale fall”. Whale falls provide food and habitats for very unusual array of creatures.

Most of the world’s ecosystems are based on photosynthesis: plants use energy from the Sun to create carbohydrates, and animals then feed on the plants. Because sunlight cannot penetrate into deep sea, photosynthesis can’t take place there,so most of the animals living in the dark, environment rely on food particles that filter down from above.

As a rule, because food is so scarce, fewer animals live on the seafloor than in shallow waters. However, very large populations of animals can be found in certain part of the deep sea living on whale falls. A 40-tonne whale carcass injects a huge amount of energy into the deep-sea environment. Once a whale has come to rest on the seafloor, it doesn’t take long for deep-sea creatures to arrive and start feasting.
